Antabuse has been designed especially for patients unable to stop drinking and diagnosed with chronic alcoholism. This is a prescription medicine and it should be taken only by people who do not have contraindications, to prevent dangerous side effects. If you have diabetes, kidney or liver disease, thyroid disease, brain damage, mental disorder or any other disorders that may affect the efficiency of the treatment your health care provider needs to know about them in advance. It’s also a good idea to make a list of other medications you are currently taking. Because of dangerous drug interaction you may be required to temporarily stop taking some of them or your Antabuse dosage will need to be adjusted.

Antabuse is FDA pregnancy category C. It can pass into breast milk, but it is still not known whether it can harm an unborn baby. Make sure you do not breastfeed while taking Antabuse and tell your doctor in case of getting pregnant. Be aware of some products that contain small quantities of alcohol (vinegar, mouth washes, some sauces), as Antabuse may interact with them, causing unpleasant effects, such as vertigo, nausea, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat and some other symptoms.
